breaking news following the announcement, that albuquerque public safety director darren white is stepping down. his retirement follows controversy over white picking his wife up from a crash scene and driving her to the hospital. heather mills is live downtown with the details. mayor richard berry told me just an hour ago that it was white who used the words "retirement".. the mayor says white is leaving behind two decades of public service.. and he wishes darren and kathy white nothing but the best. in darren white's retirement announcement --- sent out by the city -- he says he's retiring in order to quote "end the distraction" surrounding his wife's recent accident. white came under fire for picking up his wife from a crash scene last week.. and drivng her to the hospital. she crashed her porsche into a curb last week. doctors say she had a seizure. the mayor says he has no reason to believe that white stepped down for any other reason than to do what's best for the city. "i think you see an individual whose doing today what he thinks is best, maybe not for his family, but for his community, than that's his legacy." the mayor says he will sit down with both the fire and police chiefs in the coming weeks to determine who would be best be suited for the job. as for the investigation into white's actions both white and the mayor say it will and needs to continue. tom... heather.. today before white's resignation, the city council met to discuss bringing in an outside organization to complete an investigation. is that still a possibility? tom.. when i spoke with councilors earlier this afternoon -- before white's retirement annoucenement.. they told me they'd have to cross that bridge when it comes.. but it's still a possibility.
