Baby in state custody after mother tries to sell her
July 28, 2011
a new mexico mother arrested for trying to give her newborn baby away. today sharon erickson did some digging to find out what's next for the two week old child. the future for a 13-day old baby girl from grants is uncertain... after police say her mother ... 26- year old michaela marshal... went door to door asking people to take her infant. "what is it that required this parent to be so desperate to try and find an alternate place for the child?" police say marshal was drunk when she was arrested monday- more than 3 times over the legal limit. the baby is now in protective custody.. and this morning... the state's "children, youth and families department" met with relatives of the baby girl... to decide what's next. "the first presumption is always that the child is better off with the parent." but since that meeting... c-y-f-d has filed a petition to keep the baby girl in protective custody-- and now the courts have ten days to hold a hearing. if it's granted... the baby will remain in the care of the state--- for at least the next six months.
