police. the aps school board says its police department will continue to work under the bernalillo county sheriff's office. marissa torres is live at a-p-s headquarters with our top story. marissa... it wasn't an easy decision for board members to make. antoinette- this has been a heated process to work out. aps officers are commissioned by bernalillo county sheriff's department. sheriff dan houston is minute thumbnail 12:00 pm demanding certain things fall into place for the relationship to continue. one of those things is training. the agreement says aps officers must go through the same training as deputies. we sat down with aps chief operations officer brad winter. he says the sheriff's training isn't necessary. winter says a-p-s police officers go through their own training. but the board will still agree to it. winter says the most controversial issue is figuring out who handles felonies on school property between a-p-d and the sheriff's office. 90 percent of the schools are in the city, and the sheriff can't dictact policy of albuquerque police or to the city of albuquerque on what's done. so we thought it was necessary that we all get together winter says there's still some confusion as to what police chief ray schultz is authorized to do under the new agreement. he's out of town. we're told the sheriff won't comment until the memoradum is signed. but winter did get a letter from sheriff houston- who said communication has been a big problem. the memoradum hasn't officially been turned over. that'll happen later today. winter says the board will minute thumbnail 12:01 pm continue to look into forming an independent police dartment. live at aps headquarters marissa torres kob eyewitness news 4
