Quake causes fire at nuclear plant

July 16, 2007

Japan was rocked by a strong earthquake which killed several people and started a small fire at the world's largest nuclear plant. Hundreds of people were injured when the 6.8-magnitude tremor struck north-western Japan. Buildings swayed as far away as the capital, Tokyo, 250 kms (155 miles) away. The quake's epicentre was in Niigata prefecture, which is home to the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant. A fire in an electrical transformer at the plant was quickly brought under control but the damage has knocked out three power units. Officials said there were no reports of damage to the reactors.
