Campaigning for Senegal's presidential campaign begins on Sunday ahead of a February 25 vote which will pit the country's 80-year-old incumbent, Abdoulaye Wade, against several members of the opposition. Tensions have been raised following an announcement last week by Wade that another political heavyweight, former prime minister Idrissa Seck, was leaving the opposition to back him. Another card Wade has used to bolster popular support is a major public works program, with a raft of operations designed to bring jobs to an impoverished population. A report looks ahead to the campaign. (c) 2006 AFP
