Fighting between Hamas and Fatah continued to rage across the Gaza Strip despite calls from both sides to broker a new ceasefire. The collapse of a three-day old truce happened hours before Middle East mediators were due to meet in Washington where the US hopes to stiffen international support for the embargo against the Hamas-led government over its continuing refusal to recognise Israel and renounce violence. Russia wants the blockade lifted while the UN and an influential British parliamentary committee have questioned whether the isolation of Hamas is, in fact, counterproductive.
