Saving Sierra Leone's chimps
August 30, 2007
Hunting and habitat destruction has led to a drastic reduction in Sierra Leone's chimpanzee population in recent decades. The government outlawed their capture and killing last month, and declared a one-month amnesty during which people keeping a chimp as a pet were expected to hand it over to the authorities. The amnesty expires this week. AFPTV visits a conservation center near Freetown which aims to teach locals caution, and respect, for the wild nature of chimpanzees.
