Ethiopia enters new millennium

Ethiopia entered the new millennium on Wednesday, seven years after the rest of the world. The Horn of Africa nation follows the Coptic calendar, a system similar to the Julian calendar set up by Roman ruler Julius Caeser in 46 BC, and which counts 13 months. The rest of the world uses the 12-month Gregorian calendar. Ethiopia set out to mark the date in style, with a myriad of events organised in the capital and throughout the country.
