Royal Unveils Presidential Election Manifesto

February 11, 2007

France's Socialist presidential candidate Segolene Royal has shifted up an election gear by finally unveiling her campaign manifesto for the presidential election on April 22. In a long-awaited speech in front of 15,000 Socialist Party delegates in an exhibition centre near Paris, Royal announced a 100-point "presidential pact" including promises to increase the minimum wage, boost social housing, invest in renewable energy sources and "consolidate" the 35-hour-week. Socialists hope the proposals will revive Royal's flagging campaign and claw back voter support lost to her right-wing rival Nicolas Sarkozy. Images and soundbites. (c) 2006 AFP
