Emerging from months of seclusion, Cuban President Fidel Castro has appeared on television, in a meeting with his Venezuelan counterpart that reportedly took place Monday. Castro, looking healthier than when he was last shown on television in October, told Hugo Chavez his recovery from surgery was "far from being a lost battle." News of the 80-year-old leader has been stealthily guarded by the communist authorities since he first underwent intestinal surgery on July 27. But US authorities suggested earlier this month that he could have only days to live, while Spain's El Pais daily said he had suffered intestinal hemorrhaging and a severe infection. Extracts from the Cuban television images, which raise new speculation about Castro's staying power. (c) 2006 AFP
