Bolivia's natural disaster

February 14, 2007

Bolivia is being affected by floods, frosts and drought all at the same time. Government officials say they have also had to turn their eye to the severe frosts that have all but ruined entire crops in the highlands of the department of La Paz. What's more, a drought has now been declared in the area, and the lack of rain is burning off what little was left in the fields. The farmers have called on the government to help, saying they will work if the government finds them jobs. They also hope to be given the precious seeds which can be used to plant crops for next year. In a strange twist of fate, at the foot of these drought-stricken mountains lies stretches of land that were recently flooded. Many are now predicting a cold, hungry winter ahead because so much of the country has been affected.
