China ordains Catholic bishop

China's state-backed Catholic church ordained Father Joseph Li Shan as the new bishop of Beijing. But the tightly orchestrated ceremony made no references to the Vatican or whether the bishop had received papal approval. China's state-backed Catholic Church restricts contact with Rome, which has not had ties with Beijing since 1951, angry at the Vatican's recognition of Taiwan.
