Gebrselassie ran the marathon in an official time of two hours, four minutes and 26 seconds, slicing 29 seconds off the previous record set by Kenya's Paul Tergat in Berlin in 2003. The 34-year-old was helped along the 26 mile or 42 kilometre course by ideal weather conditions and over one million cheering spectators. Joanna Partridge reports for Reuters
